Q : Are you able to import custom tiles, monsters, or use larger art when making games made with MonMae?
A : Customization and Personality is our main focus for MonMae, so of course you can quickly, and easily import custom tilesets, monsters, characters and trainers, and even use larger sprites for all of these. MonMae default is 16x16 for overworld, and 56x56 battle sprites. However, we already have native support for 32x, 64x, and 128x world sprites, and 64x, 128x, and 256x battle sprites. Custom sizes are also doable quite easily, and we have tutorials for custom tilesets, as well as custom monsters.
Q : How customizable is the battle system. Are there multiple battle systems available to choose from?
A : Although we do plan to add battle systems resemblance to Zelda and Final Fantasy battle systems, at this time, we only have an editable Pokémon-style one. Customizations include the ability to use (or not use) back sprites, what sized sprites to use for your monsters and trainers, a selection of battle themes to change how battles look, and some simple stuff like "game over screen yes/no".
Q : How customizable are menu's, for example the battle scene UI?
A : The menu's and battle scene are a little more difficult to customize, however, to combat this, we have supplied multiple versions of each of these that you can choose from. For example, the menu's have themes you can choose from, and you can customize these as well in the sprite editor. Additionally, we have a few different battle UI setups you can choose from, and customize from the sprite editor as well.
Q : Can I make commercial games using this engine, and using the art, music, and SFX within it?
A : Yes you can! However, please don't use our art or other assets in products that aren't made using MonMae. If you're attracted to our art or other assets, you can purchase them separately (with commercials licenses) on our itch page. We also have a [COMPLETE] bundle for assets only, at a reduced price as it doesn't include the MonMae engine.
Q : How do I make custom monsters, moves, types and elements, stuff like that?
A : MonMae has a visual editor that lets you create custom monsters and moves extremely easily. Please watch our visual editor tutorial for more details on that!
Q : What requirements or dependencies does MonMae require to run?
A : MonMae is currently built on GameMaker, and uses some of it's features to build your games, for example : Asset Handling, Console Porting, World Creation, etc. This is covered in the very first MonMae Tutorial. GameMaker's requirements can be found here. We do have plans to become completely dependant from GameMaker in the future, and are working every day closer and closer to this goal.
